Inside The Cult Of The Jesus Army on SBS Viceland and SBS on Demand S1E1 and S1E2 – Once hailed as a radical Christian movement offering purpose and community, the Jesus Army concealed a culture of control, secrecy, and abuse.
This documentary gives voice to former members as they recount lives shaped by spiritual coercion, communal living, and deeply personal trauma. Through intimate testimony and rare archive, the series uncovers how power and faith became dangerously entangled – and follows survivors on their journey toward healing and justice.
Episode One:
This episode traces the Jesus Fellowship’s rise from rural Christian commune to nationwide movement. Members recall the early draw of community and faith — and how it gave way to control, secrecy, and obedience. With powerful testimony, we hear how lives were shaped by celibacy vows, financial surrender, and unquestioned authority inside communal homes run by church elders.
Episode Two:
This episode follows former members as they share long-buried stories of harm inside the Jesus Army. In therapy and interviews, they speak of being forced apart from loved ones, silenced by leaders, and, in some cases, abused by those in power. As the weight of the past is named, a long-overdue reckoning begins – both for survivors and for the church itself.
