Fukushima: Days That Shocked The World on SBS and SBS on Demand S1E1 – On March 11th 2011, at 14:46, Japan was rocked by the most powerful earthquake in the nation’s history, triggering tsunami alerts and causing panic up and down the east coast.
When the tsunami arrived, the wall of water reached 40 metres high, and flooded 10 kilometres inland, destroying everything in its path. In just a couple of hours, nearly 20,000 people had been killed.
Although few yet knew it, the tsunami had also crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was heading for a melt-down. We hear from survivors and witnesses to that catastrophic day.
