Field Of Vampires on SBS Viceland and SBS on Demand – In rural Poland, archaeologists have made a terrifying discovery: a skeleton buried with a sickle across her neck and a giant padlock on her toe – double protection against her rising from the grave.
This corpse was feared to be a real-life vampire.
She is wearing a silk cap, a sign of high status. Could she be a female Count Dracula? But this is just the start of the mystery. This skeleton is not alone: she is at the heart of an entire Field of Vampires, surrounded by up to 30 more ‘deviant burials’.
Now, an international team of experts use cutting-edge science and historical research to investigate who this enigmatic woman was and why she was so feared.
Travelling across Europe and the US, they unearth extraordinary rituals and reveal why some bodies were singled out as the ‘living dead’. Calling upon a pioneering facial reconstructor, can they unlock the secrets of the Field of Vampires?
