SBS again named Best Australian Podcast Publisher of the Year – Australia’s hybrid national broadcaster SBS has been named Best Publisher at the 2023 Australian Podcast Awards, marking its second consecutive year of being recognised as the country’s best producer of podcast content.
SBS Audio Head of Language Content, Davide Schiappapietra, said:
“We are thrilled to once again be named Best Publisher at the Australian Podcast Awards for our distinctive slate of podcasts by our Audio, News, Television, Sport and NITV teams which amplify diverse voices and explore nuanced stories like no other publisher or network can.”
“We are immensely proud of SBS’s unique podcasts like SBS Italian’s bilingual series The Ugly Ducklings of Italian Cuisine on Italy’s lesser-known delicacies, SBS News’ Community Starters which traces the first founders of multicultural communities in Australia, and NITV’s Goodways, a conversational podcast made by and for First Nations people.
“We are excited for 2024 where we will deliver more perspectives, more truth-telling and more entertainment for all Australians, including new companion podcasts Alone for the record-breaking Alone Australia series and an Insight podcast which provides a new way for audiences to engage with one of our flagship current affairs programs.”

SBS, as Australia’s contemporary national broadcaster, produces award-winning podcast content in more than 60 languages including English. Generating more than 5 million plays each month, the network has amassed over 200 podcasts across a wide range of genres including news, society and culture, history, sport, education and entertainment.
SBS also uses podcasts to deliver essential services through SBS Learn English, a free adult English language learning service, and Australia Explained, which assists new migrants with practical information.
“Our aim with all our podcasts is to showcase a rich diversity of voices, which we have achieved once again this year through unique offerings like Bad English, Should You Really Eat That?, Great Minds, BL.A.C.K Medicine, My Ramadan, The Idiom which won a 2023 Signal Award, and Seen which has season 2 coming in the new year,”
– said Schiappapietra.
Since 2021, SBS Audio has invited podcast pitches from the public in an annual call-out for original ideas and new and diverse voices. Proposed podcasts can be in any language, with last year’s call out generating 175 pitches from across Australia, eight pilot episodes and six commissioned series.
In March 2023, SBS Audio was introduced as one unified digital experience designed to better showcase and improve access to podcasts from across the network and live streaming services. SBS Audio podcasts are available at sbs.com.au/audio, the SBS Audio app, LiSTNR, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other streaming platforms.
