Screen Producers Australia (SPA) yesterday congratulated National Indigenous Television (NITV) on its 10th anniversary as a national free-to-air broadcaster as part of the SBS Network.

In the last decade, NITV has made an enormous contribution to the media landscape and Australian storytelling through its unique perspectives and generosity in sharing stories of culture and country with all of us.

NITV has developed many of our greatest filmmakers and industry leaders over the years, either as employees who have gone on to become industry changemakers or through taking a chance on young emerging filmmakers who have gone on to global accolades and awards.

“From urban themes to remote community songlines, NITV documentaries, drama, kids and News and Current Affairs programs have been a priceless gift to the nation and a source of pride for Indigenous people who are now seeing their voices, faces and stories across all our broadcasters and streaming platforms thanks to the groundwork NITV has set over the last ten years,” said SPA CEO Matthew Deaner.

Over the last decade, SPA members have amassed over 21 commissions, such as Incarceration Nation by Bent3Land Productions, Servant or Slave by No Coincidence Media, Strait to the Plate by Lone Star Productions, True Colours by Bunya Productions, Grace Beside Me by Magpie Pictures, and Little J & Big Cuz by Ned Lander Media through NITV. It is these carefully crafted, meaningful, and bold productions developed with independent screen businesses within the SPA membership that have helped shape NITV into one of Australia’s most unique and trusted broadcasters for Indigenous stories and culture.

As part of the celebration, SPA and NITV hosted an industry huddle where screen industry leaders discussed NITV’s strategy and content ambitions and broader industry collaboration to increase funding opportunities for First Nations stories.
