Tonight | Under Investigation with Liz Hayes on Channel 9 and 9Now

Under Investigation with Liz Hayes on Channel 9 – When Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Colin Winchester was assassinated in his suburban driveway in 1990, some suggested it had been a Mafia ‘hit’.

But for two decades police concentrated on the wrong man – David Eastman – who was convicted of the killing but exonerated in 2019…paid 7.3 million dollars in compensation after the evidence against him was proved to be spurious.

Now Under Investigation uncovers proof that the Calabrian Mafia were almost certainly responsible for Colin Winchester’s murder, as payback for his involvement in a deep-undercover anti-mafia operation – the cultivation of a massive drug crop in remote NSW.

Using previously-secret documents and testimony to piece together the timeline of this second “excellent murder” – UI’s experts also reveal how a wild-goose chase by local Canberra cops allowed the ‘Ndrangheta to avoid scrutiny … and why Australia is now paying the price.

JOINING LIZ HAYES ON THE WAR TABLE:

● Geoffrey Watson SC – the leading Sydney barrister who’s calling for a royal commission into the killing

● And in Europe, Professor Anna Sergi – a specialist in Italian organised crime who’s testified in Australian mafia cases.
