Murder Down Under on Channel 9 and 9Now Byron Bay Murders – The chilling mystery of 67 murdered and missing women along Australia’s picturesque east coast will be unpacked in Byron Bay Murders, on Tuesday, July 22, at 8.30pm and Wednesday, July 23, at 9.00pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
The two-part true crime special will explore a haunting pattern of disappearances of young women aged 14 to 20 between Newcastle and Byron Bay that have remained unsolved for decades, with not a single arrest made.
A passionate Member of Parliament, Jeremy Buckingham, leads the investigation, driven by personal tragedy. Following his son’s devastating suicide, Jeremy stumbled upon the alarming cluster of unsolved missing persons cases and his grief propelled him to bring the issue to Parliament to demand answers in the hope of giving these women a voice and their families closure.
Former Detective Sergeant Damian Loone, criminal psychologist Tim Watson Munro and criminologist Xanthe Mallett will examine the evidence of these cases and investigate all the relevant material in an effort to break new ground.
Byron Bay Murders begins in Newcastle with an initial cluster of disappearances from the late 1970s, including Leanne Goodall, Robyn Hickie and Amanda Robinson, followed by Amanda Zolis, Joy Hodgins and Anni Tominac.
The investigation will shine a light on the heartbreaking search for answers by families like Gary, brother of Susan Kiely, and Pam, sister of Leanne Goodall, who share similar frustrations over the neglectful investigations by police. It will raise the chilling possibility of a link to Australia’s most notorious serial killer, Ivan Milat.
The series also examines a new cluster of cases including Allison Newstead, Melissa Astill, Melissa Hunt and Gordana Kotevski. While three were murdered before Milat’s arrest, Gordana vanished afterward, casting doubt on his sole involvement.
Byron Bay Murders delves into how advancements in DNA technology and new leads might at last deliver justice for these families. It will raise the question of how many predators were operating in plain sight, and if the opportunity to catch them has passed.
Murder Down Under – Byron Bay Murders is produced by Perpetual Entertainment for the 9Network.
