Today | Gardening Australia Junior on ABC Kids: Costa grows a garden in space – Costa Georgiadis, Pia and Savannah-Rose find an unexpected use for their time when their spaceship changes course: they decide to grow plants in space. Astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg helps them work out how a space veggie garden might grow. It airs Monday 19 October 2026 at 4:05pm on ABC Kids, with streaming on ABC iview.
This space-themed instalment takes the show’s usual hands-on gardening idea into an unfamiliar setting. The challenge is still about learning how plants grow, but the crew now has to think about the conditions beyond Earth.
A new mission for the young gardeners
When the spaceship unexpectedly changes direction, Costa, Pia and Savannah-Rose use the spare time to start their own growing project. The change of setting turns an ordinary gardening question into an intergalactic one. The friends need to understand how people could care for plants when they cannot rely on a backyard, a garden bed or the usual routines at home.
An astronaut answers Costa’s call
Australian of the Year and astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg is shed-sitting when Costa reaches her through his hotline. She offers tips about how plants are grown on the International Space Station. Armed with that knowledge, the crew sets off on its final-frontier mission to grow a space vegetable garden. The episode gives young viewers a playful way into the science behind growing food away from Earth.
