Recipe of the Year premieres on ABC with Adam Liaw and Pia Miranda – ABC is bringing a new food competition to Sunday nights. Recipe of the Year premieres Sunday 11 October at 7.30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.
Cook Adam Liaw and actor Pia Miranda host the seven-part local series. First, it puts the stories behind Australia’s home cooking at the centre of the competition.
A local food competition
A country farm sets the scene for home cooks competing for Australia’s Recipe of the Year. Family, culture and everyday life shape their dishes. For example, families have passed some recipes down through generations. Others are simple weeknight favourites.
In addition, the format gives ABC a new local entertainment series in its Sunday 7.30pm slot. It combines a cooking contest with personal food stories and a distinctly Australian judging perspective.
The Country Women’s Association at the table
The Country Women’s Association is central to the competition. CWA judges will set classic challenges, including scones and jam rolls. They will also award coveted CWA ribbons across the series.
The line-up includes a 19-year-old cannoli entrepreneur. It also includes a Sydney builder whose mother’s food brought comfort during wartime. Meanwhile, a teacher reconnects with her late mother through family recipes. A Malaysian-born cook also shares the flavours of home with international students.
More than a cook-off
Each week, the cooks, hosts and CWA members gather around the table. Together, they decide which recipe comes out on top. Consequently, the series keeps the judging close to the food and the people who made it.
As a result, the format leans away from high-pressure cooking contests. Instead, it focuses on relatable recipes, inspiring cooks and dishes people can share at home.
Finally, the ABC commissioned Recipe of the Year, while i8 Studio co-produces it with the broadcaster. Josh Martin, Liaw, Samantha de Alwis and Alenka Henry executive produce. Zoe Norton Lodge executive produces for ABC. Rachel Millar is ABC’s Head of Entertainment.
