Four Corners investigates veterans’ claims and private firms in Defenceless on ABC – Reporter Elise Worthington examines the system meant to support Australian veterans. The Four Corners investigation, Defenceless, airs Monday at 8.30pm on ABC.

The programme looks at claims processing and the growing role of private companies in services connected to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. ABC says the investigation asks whether business practices are adding to the burden on veterans and taxpayers.

The issue matters beyond any single company. Delays in veterans’ claims have already drawn scrutiny, and substantial public money has gone towards clearing backlogs. The episode examines what happens when private firms enter a system serving people who may be vulnerable.

What Defenceless investigates

Worthington speaks with veterans and examines how companies market their services. ABC says the programme will investigate allegations about fees for medical reports and deductions from compensation claims.

It will also examine concerns about medicinal cannabis consultations and the handling of private medical information. Another focus is alleged billing for services that were not supplied. Those matters are allegations being investigated by the programme, not findings established by this preview.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs is responsible for veterans’ welfare. According to the ABC synopsis, the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide identified harm linked to delays in claim processing. The government subsequently committed more than half a billion dollars to reduce the backlog and improve services.

Private for-profit providers have moved into parts of this work. The investigation will examine how their business models operate and whether oversight has kept pace with the services being offered.

A question of care and accountability

More than half a million veterans live across Australia, ABC says. Many live with physical or mental effects of service. For them, decisions about claims, treatment and compensation can have immediate consequences.

Defenceless puts those experiences beside the financial incentives of firms operating around the DVA system. Worthington’s report is set to test the claims against the people and organisations involved.

Four Corners: Defenceless airs Monday 5 October 2026 at 8.30pm on ABC and ABC iview.
