ABC axes The Business after 20 years, final episode to air on 10 December – The ABC has axed The Business, its nightly business and finance program, after 20 years on air. The final episode will air on Thursday, 10 December, and the program will not return to screens in 2027.
ABC News director Simon Robinson announced the decision to staff on Friday, the ABC confirmed on its Markets Live blog. ABC business reporter David Chau also shared the news on X, saying he was “a little sad” about the cancellation.
The decision ends two decades of a dedicated nightly business program on the ABC. It also means business news on ABC TV and the ABC News Channel will move away from a dedicated nightly bulletin and towards the broadcaster’s digital, podcast and channel coverage.
1: I’m a little sad to say that after 20 years, The Business (which started off as Lateline Business) has been cancelled. The final episode will air on 10 December. I had a lot of fun filing TV stories for this program, guest-hosting it over the years…

Why the ABC is ending The Business
In his announcement, Robinson said business remained a crucial reporting round for the ABC.
Business is a crucial reporting round and we’re committed to finding ways for the team to do more of the original and impactful journalism it’s known for.
To enable us to focus our resources on delivering that we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue The Business TV program at the end of its current season.
Simon Robinson, ABC News Director
Robinson added that the ABC could better use the time and resources invested in the 15-minute program across its platforms. These include the website and app, the News Channel, podcasts and YouTube channels, as well as broadcast radio and TV programs.
What replaces The Business?
The ABC is working on a range of ideas to develop in the new year. According to Robinson, these include a visualised format for the ABC Business Daily podcast. The ABC is also looking into a daily afternoon wrap of the latest markets news.
Meanwhile, Chau pointed viewers to other places to find ABC business coverage. They include the ABC’s markets blog, the ABC Business Daily podcast, (almost) hourly market updates on the ABC News Channel and his finance reports on the 7pm News.
The Business: 20 years of ABC business news
The Business began on 14 August 2006 as Lateline Business. The ABC renamed it The Business in January 2012.
The program has covered the day’s market movements, business news features and interviews with business and political figures, along with overseas market news and analysis. Its past hosts include Ali Moore, Ticky Fullerton and Elysse Morgan.
Moore hosted Lateline Business until May 2010, when Fullerton took over. Fullerton stayed until December 2016, and Morgan then led the program until December 2022.
When is the final episode of The Business?
With The Business axed, its last episode will air on Thursday, 10 December 2026.
