Exclusive | Seven local 4pm bulletin safe with new Alex Cullen fronted show for 3pm – Alex Cullen has revealed he’s heading back to television screens, signing a contract with the Seven Network to front a brand-new afternoon news program.
Speaking candidly on GoldFM’s The Christian O’Connell Show, where he is a regular contributor, Cullen said:
“It was a significant day yesterday with me, signing a contract with Seven, which was really exciting. I’m going to be the afternoon host on Channel Seven. So we’re going to be taking you through the afternoon. We’re going to have a show at three o’clock.”
His comments sparked immediate speculation that Seven might be reshaping its daytime news schedule, with some suggesting the move could spell the end of the local 4pm news bulletins.
TV Central can exclusively reveal that Cullen’s new program will run for one full hour at 3pm weekdays. It will not replace the 4pm local bulletins. Insiders insist those services are safe.
The 3pm hour will not be a traditional bulletin, but a broader afternoon news program — blending live rolling coverage of breaking stories, news analysis, special reports, and conversations with guests. The aim is to create a flowing, accessible hour of news content that draws viewers in earlier and then naturally hands them over to the 4pm local bulletins.
Far from being a replacement, the new 3pm program is designed as a support structure:
- Providing a stronger lead-in for the 4pm news.
- Building audience momentum through to The Chase Australia at 5pm.
- Ultimately strengthening Seven’s entire afternoon and early evening performance.
Strategic Move for Seven
The strategy reflects Seven’s commitment to staying competitive across all dayparts, particularly as news-hungry audiences continue to seek updates throughout the day.
For Cullen, it’s a return to the spotlight after his time on Nine’s Today .
With confirmation that the 4pm bulletins remain safe and that the 3pm show is an addition, not a replacement, Seven is doubling down on its investment in news, betting on a stronger afternoon flow to capture and keep viewers well into primetime.
