Betrayal on Channel 7 and 7plus S1E3 and S1E4 – John Hughes joined MI5 in his heyday during the war on terror.
But now he’s in his mid 40s with a marriage that’s in trouble, two small children, and a workplace he feels alienated from.
On a hunch John meets a British Iranian man with links to the Stockport gangland who claims he has intelligence about a plot on UK soil. Before he can share intel, the informant is executed, and John kills the assassin in self-defence.
This puts John in direct conflict with his superiors who are furious that he appears to have got involved in a gang turf war. John’s efforts to save his marriage are complicated by his inability to let the case go. And when he meets Mehreen, an intelligence operative who is tasked with taking over John’s duties, he finds an unlikely ally.
As John becomes increasingly convinced of the involvement of a hardline faction of the Iranian regime, he also starts to worry there are enemies closer to home. But can he identify the target and avert the attack before it’s too late?
Episode 3
John and Mehreen recover from their standoff with Major General Qasem Asadi and the Stockport crime gang. With MI5 now finally on his side, John tracks the General to a high-end hotel. John and Mehreen must go undercover to uncover whether Qasem is the mastermind behind a potentially explosive threat to national security.
When there’s a glitch in the operation, John’s suspicions once again turn inwards. He enlists Rudy to help him investigate, convinced that Qasem must have a direct line inside the Security Services. John’s absence from home pushes things to breaking point with Claire, and she takes comfort in a colleague.
An unexpected lead from his informant, Jordan, suddenly gives John the breakthrough he’s been looking for. But before he can alert his colleagues, John is stunned by a shocking revelation from Mehreen. Feeling increasingly isolated, John follows the intel from Jordan and finds the proof he’s been searching for – but John is intercepted before he can call for help.
Episode 4
With hours until the suspected attack on a university, John finds himself alone and in captivity. If he is to save the lives of those at risk, he must find a means of escape, without alerting the men who are holding him – as well as the allies whom he can no longer trust. But when the attack doesn’t materialise, an unsettling lull finally falls on John’s investigation.
Meanwhile, Claire is trying to move on and establish a new normal for her and the kids away from John and their family home. But a surprise visit quickly pulls Claire into the dangerous world of John’s work. What ensues is a deadly stand-off, and this time it’s one that affects those closest to John. It becomes clear to John and Mehreen that the people behind the attack will stop at nothing, and they must overcome their divisions and band together to work out what the General has planned.
Caught between his commitment to his nation and his family, will John finally manage to thwart the plot that he’s been so fixated on?
