Axed: The Latest: Seven News – For years, The Latest: Seven News served as Australia’s final word in nightly news, delivering breaking stories, incisive interviews, and late-night analysis to audiences across the nation. But in a surprising move the program will be discontinued, effective immediately.
Launched in 2018, The Latest: Seven News aimed to provide Australians with a late-night digest of the day’s most significant events. Hosted by seasoned journalist Michael Usher, the program became a mainstay for those seeking clarity amid the chaos of breaking news. From global pandemics to election coverage and natural disasters, The Latest became synonymous with reliable reporting delivered with gravitas.
In February 2024, it was announced that production would shift to Seven’s Perth studios from March, resulting in Usher stepping down from the program. In March 2024, it was confirmed that Tim McMillan would replace Michael Usher and Angela Cox from 18 March.
The decision to axe The Latest reflects broader trends affecting traditional media. As digital platforms continue to dominate, many Australians are turning to on-demand news services and social media for instant updates. This seismic shift has pressured networks to reconsider how they allocate resources.
Seven Network plans to reallocate resources to bolster its flagship news programs, including the 6:00 PM bulletin and online platforms. Resources will be poured into Seven National News at Noon with Natarsha Belling.
