Making Marie Antoinette trailer reveals Eleanor Coppola’s set diary – Eleanor Coppola’s footage from the making of her daughter Sofia’s 2006 film has become a feature-length documentary, and MUBI has released its official trailer.
Making Marie Antoinette will stream exclusively on MUBI in Australia from 6 November 2026. The film revisits the Palace of Versailles shoot through footage Eleanor captured while observing Sofia Coppola at work, offering an unusually close family perspective on a major production.
The Australian streaming date gives viewers a chance to revisit the film’s creation in its 20th-anniversary year. Rather than retelling Marie Antoinette’s life, this documentary looks at the craft, pressures and relationships behind the camera.
What Eleanor Coppola filmed
Eleanor Coppola accompanied her daughter to the set in 2005 and recorded about 80 hours of material. Sofia’s third feature, Marie Antoinette, starred Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman. The production was the first film granted permission to shoot at the Palace of Versailles, according to MUBI.
The documentary includes legendary costume designer Milena Canonero at work and examines Sofia’s experience as a young female director. The material also becomes a portrait of a mother watching her daughter lead a large film crew.
After Eleanor’s death, Sofia returned to the footage to fulfil her mother’s wish to turn it into a feature. “She was on set as a filmmaker and also my mother, so I found it so moving to go back through the material and to see our shoot through her eyes,” Sofia said.
Voices and production
Aaron Matthews edited the footage with input from Eleanor’s friends Davia Nelson and Liz Bird. Diane Lane voices Eleanor, reading from journals in which she reflected on the shoot and her relationship with Sofia.
The documentary is produced by Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Rachel Dengiz, Youree Henley and Sofia Coppola. Financing came from OUR FILMS, Mediawan Rights and Entourage Pictures, with support from CHANEL. Its UK premiere took place at the BFI London Film Festival.
The new trailer offers a look at the archival production material and the intimate framing of the story. The Australian release is a streaming premiere on MUBI; any overseas theatrical dates should not be mistaken for a local cinema schedule.
