The Surfer on Stan trailer – Stan today released the trailer for the psychological thriller The Surfer starring Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario, Leaving Las Vegas) and is set to open with a theatrical release in Australian cinemas on May 15, before streaming exclusively on Stan from June 15.
Shot in Western Australia and directed by Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium), The Surfer made waves at its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival with a six-minute standing ovation and was described as a ‘cult movie in the making ’ and one of ‘Nicolas Cage’s best performances’.
The Surfer will soon represent Australia at the prestigious SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas in March.
When a man returns to Australia to buy back his family home after many years in the U.S., he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a group of local surfers who claim ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood.
Wounded, he defies them and remains at the beach, demanding acceptance. As the conflict escalates, he is brought right to the edge of his sanity and his entire identity is thrown into question.
Written by Thomas Martin, The Surfer is an intensely unnerving feature film shot in a single location in Yallingup in Western Australia. Alongside Cage, the film stars an impressive Australian ensemble cast including Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck), Nic Cassim (Mr Inbetween), Miranda Tapsell (The Dry), Alexander Bertrand (Australian Gangster), Justin Rosniak (Last King of the Cross), Rahel Romahn (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Finn Little (Stan Exclusive Series Yellowstone) and Charlotte Maggi (Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child on Fire).
The Surfer, an Australian-Irish Co-Production, is produced by Robert Connolly’s Arenamedia, Lovely Productions, Tea Shop Productions and Gramercy Park Media with support from Screenwest through the Western Australian Production Attraction Incentive. The Surfer will be released nationally in the US on May 2 via Roadside Attractions.
The Surfer will be released theatrically in Australia on May 15, via Madman Entertainment and CinemaPlus, then exclusively on Stan on June 15 as a Stan Original Film.
