Binge commissions new comedic documentary premiering 21 July – BINGE today announces the commission of a new original comedic documentary, SOLD! Who Broke the Australian Dream? a one-hour special, exploring Australia’s very topical housing crisis premiering on July 21st on BINGE and FOX8 on Foxtel.

With major production investment from Screen Australia, in association with Screen NSW, the BINGE original follows self-confessed, C-grade celeb, Mark Humphries, a comedian on his own personal journey to uncover why so many Australians are struggling to secure home ownership. In the show, Mark dives headfirst into Australia’s complex housing debate, looking at the current house prices, soaring rent, and the “Australian Dream” that feels more out of reach than ever.

SOLD! Who Broke the Australian Dream? will take audiences on a rollercoaster of revelations, exploring the pressures on renters and what needs to change in Australia’s housing landscape. By tackling an important issue in a humorous and engaging way, Executive Producer and Writer, Craig Reucassel, has drawn on inspiration from his own laugh-out-loud investigative show Big Deal to combine humour and expert insight to the series.

Howard Myers-Rifai, Head of Unscripted Originals said:

“We are excited to bring SOLD! Who Broke the Australian Dream? to BINGE. The housing crisis is something we all experience, whether as renters or homeowners, and Mark’s journey provides a highly relevant and timely take on an issue that is affecting millions of Australians. We look forward to sharing this unique show with our audience, combining important conversations with much-needed laughter.”

Screen Australia Head of Documentary Richard Huddleston said:

“With no signs that the housing crisis is going away, this timely film puts forward a compelling, insightful and solutions-based argument for change. With Mark Humphries at the helm, it delivers laughs as well as solutions. Packing a punch along the way, SOLD! Who Broke the Australian Dream? will provide an important contribution to the national conversation.”

Head of Screen NSW, Kyas Hepworth said:

“Screen NSW is pleased to support the team at Wedge-Tail Pictures to bring SOLD! Who Broke the Australian Dream? to life. With its sharp and comedic edge and compelling storytelling, this show will examine one of the pressing issues that many Australians are facing today. We’re excited to see NSW’s regional communities play a central role in bringing this important conversation to the screen.”

Filming for SOLD! Who Broke the Australian Dream? is already underway and will feature locations from around Australia, showcasing a range of the nation’s housing crisis. The series will premiere on July 21st at 8:30pm on FOX8 on Foxtel and on BINGE from 12:00pm.
