“She led from start to finish, she’s so tough. She just knows how to attack these big races… Summer McIntosh really gave it to her the whole way, she was pushing her. The time was a couple of seconds slower than what she actually did at the Olympic trials a couple of months ago but that doesn’t matter – it’s not about times at the Olympics, it’s about medals and she was able to drive it all the way home.”
Grant Hackett on Emma McKeon backing up her Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay Gold medal on the opening day with the final of the 100m Butterfly, against US star Gretchen Walsh who set a new world record at the Olympic trials:
“Gretchen is the in-form athlete for this one… between Torri [Huske] and Gretchen from the US qualifying both first and second fastest, we’ve got a bit of work to do.
“Gretchen Walsh is probably the favourite…and maybe even a world record, we’ll see.”
Rio Gold medallist Alicia Lucas on Australia’s chances when the Women’s Rugby Sevens get underway tonight:
“They have the pressure and the privilege of seeing what’s gone before them, but what an opportunity. They are so excited, they’re so pumped… they are just ready for this moment and I’m so excited to see what they’re going to be able to showcase, and [what] the women’s game is going to bring to Stade de France over the next three days – it’s going to be electric.”
Mark Bosnich on how the Matildas get their Olympics back on track with a must-win game against Zambia tonight:
“The idea is to get the team to realise who now is their best player. In my opinion it’s Mary Fowler, and [they need to] work out a way to get her the ball as early as possible and in the best position as possible so she’s got time and space to do her stuff.
“That is the issue, and I think if they can solve that problem not only can they beat Zambia, but they can go through to the knockout stages and go deep.”
Casey Dellacqua on Spanish top seed Carlos Alcaraz opening his campaign at Roland Garros where he won the French Open last month:
“Alcaraz [is] just extremely good on this red clay. Such great footwork, he’s explosive, he always finds a way to really expose his opponents’ weaknesses but play to his strengths so well.”
Shane Heal on the Boomers taking down Spain in an impressive first pool match:
“This was a really important game for the Aussies. They had to come out and win… it was a game they had to win, needed to win because I think Spain’s probably the weakest team in the pool. But it’s good to get that one out of the way – there was some real positive signs. It was a good game, not a great game for Australia, but they’ve laid the foundations coming up against a real tough Canadian team next.”
