Prime Video also announced the new documentary film Power of the Dream, about the empowering and unlikely true story of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream
Throughout the 2023 season, Prime Video will establish itself as a destination for Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) coverage on Fridays. Prime Video coverage of the WNBA will begin on Friday, May 26, at 12:00 midday AEST with a Commissioner’s Cup game between the Phoenix Mercury and the Minnesota Lynx. Prime Video will air four games as part of the WNBA’s annual Commissioner’s Cup, including the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup Championship Game on Wednesday, August 16. The Commissioner’s Cup is an in-season competition that designates a portion of regular-season games—10 per team—as Cup play. The team from each conference with the top record in designated Cup games will then compete for the Commissioner’s Cup Championship and a special prize pool. The remaining games on Prime Video will take place during the second-half of the regular season, after the conclusion of Commissioner’s Cup play.
Prime Video has exclusive global streaming rights (excluding China, Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Finland, and Germany) to 20 WNBA games for the 2023 season, including five doubleheaders.
“We believe in the power of women’s sports to inspire and entertain audiences around the world, and remain committed to amplifying women’s voices,” said Marie Donoghue, vice president of Global Sports Video at Amazon. “Our investment in women’s sports extends beyond our live coverage, as we’re dedicated to highlighting storytelling about female athletes, and empowering female leadership in front of and behind the camera. With the extension of our WNBA deal, we are thrilled to bring the excitement of women’s basketball to Prime members once again and look forward to continuing to champion storytelling in women’s sports.”
Prime Video also announced Power of the Dream, a new documentary film about the empowering and unlikely true story of how a group of professional women’s basketball players took on a WNBA team owner and rallied behind now-Senator Raphael Warnock, forever changing the landscape of their sport and the course of U.S. politics.
Power of the Dream is from Industrial Media, Trilogy Films, Joy Mill Entertainment, and TOGETHXR. The documentary is produced by Dawn Porter, Sue Bird, Nneka Ogwumike, and Tracee Ellis Ross. The executive producers are Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman, Adriana Ambriz, Jessica Robertson, Brett Bouttier, and Reni Calister. Porter is also set to direct.
As part of a Prime membership, the WNBA on Prime Video will be available across hundreds of compatible devices worldwide, streaming from the web, or using the Prime Video app on smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes, game consoles, and connected TVs.
