Creative industry organisations invited to host break-through internships for practitioners with disability – Applications are now open for NSW arts, music and screen organisations to participate in the 2025 Createability Internship Program and be matched with talented creative practitioners with disability or who are d/Deaf through paid internships.

Supported by Create NSW, Screen NSW and Sound NSW, Createability host organisations are supported to provide meaningful, career-enhancing internships for creatives with disability and play a vital leadership role in helping break down barriers to access and inclusion across the creative industries.

Up to 10 Createability host organisations will deliver internships of 4-weeks equivalent. The internships offer accessible pathways to employment, training and professional development. Interns with suitable skills, interests and experience will be matched to opportunities with selected organisations through the competitive application process, opening in late 2024.

The 2025 Createability Internship Program is delivered by Create NSW, Screen NSW and Sound NSW, in partnership with disability advocacy organisation Accessible Arts to grow pathways to employment for practitioners with disability or who are d/Deaf.

In addition to grant funding, host organisations receive training from Accessible Arts to improve access and inclusion to remove the barriers that people with disability often face in the workplace.

Over the past three years, some of NSW’s leading arts and screen organisations across regional NSW, Western Sydney and Sydney have benefited from the program, including Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Animal Logic, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Endemol Shine, Erth Visual and Physical Inc, Lingo Pictures, Outloud, Performance Space, Sydney Theatre Company, and Tantrum Youth Arts.

Internship roles have varied from technical TV production roles, digital content creation, research, behind-the-scenes production and maker roles, and many more. These have been rewarding and life-changing opportunities, often leading to on-going employment and other long-term positive outcomes.

Applications are now open for host organisations until 21 October 2024.

Karen Rodgers, Director Arts, Create NSW said:

“The Createability Internship Program demonstrates that barriers to access and inclusion can be overcome with supportive organisations making small adjustments. Our host organisations find the program to be rewarding and many return year after year. I encourage all Arts and Cultural organisations, especially in regional NSW and Western Sydney to get involved.”

Kyas Hepworth, Head of Screen NSW said:

“From the ABC and Animal Logic to Endemol Shine – the Creatability Internship program has benefitted several organisations across the NSW screen industry and provided many rewarding outcomes for the interns taking part in the program. We encourage production and film organisations to take part in supporting increased inclusivity across the sector.”

Emily Collins, Head of Sound NSW said:

“We’re delighted to be able to extend this fantastic program to include music industry organisations. Internships are an important way for creatives to get real-world industry experience and expand their networks. But Creatability is also great opportunity for host organisations to learn from their interns and break down barriers to employment opportunities beyond the program itself.”

Liz Martin, Accessible Arts CEO said:

“Accessible Arts is delighted to partner with Create NSW, Screen NSW and Sound NSW to deliver the Createability initiative again in 2025. This internship program is an important step towards a more diverse and dynamic creative industries sector. Increasing access and inclusion in the creative industry has a broader impact, by paving the way for increased inclusivity and accessibility in the stories we tell and how we tell them.”

Kim Akhurst, Compass ABC TV Series Producer said:

“Compass has hosted two interns with the Createability Internship Program. Both worked as researchers and contributed enormously to our production through their work, creativity and lived experience. Increasing accessibility and inclusivity in the ABC benefits everyone.”
