The Secret Life of Lighthouses on SBS – Presenter Rob Bell is on a voyage of discovery, taking him from the lighthouses of Britain and America through the storms of the North Sea to the tropics of Panama and the dust of the Mojave Desert.
This season he’s uncovering extraordinary feats of human ingenuity and exploring some of the wonders of the engineering world. His travels take him on adventures on both sides of the Atlantic, tackling the world’s busiest shipping lane, and setting sail in search of America’s first lighthouse. Rob meets local seafarers and lighthouse keepers to hear stories of shipwrecks discovering extraordinary feats of bravery, ingenuity, and design as he continues to crack the code of these enigmatic structures.
Season Three, Episode One: Beachy Head Lighthouse
Rob heads to England’s south coast, where he discovers a trio of lighthouses built to protect vessels on the M25 of the high seas. At Beachy Head he meets an 18th century vicar on a mission to save more than the souls of seafarers, experiences gravity defying Victorian innovation and discovers the genius way 20th century engineering rescued a lighthouse from plunging into the sea.
