Rise and Fall: The World Trade Center on SBS – The Twin Towers were more than two skyscrapers: they were a dream, an idea, a city unto themselves.
They were on the drawing boards for months before the call comes in: add another twenty or thirty floors; make these the tallest buildings in the world.
Built over the course of eight years and through the work of more than 10,000 men and women, they are totally unlike any skyscrapers that came before, not just in height but in their fundamental design and means of construction:
On that terrible morning of September 11th, 2001, both planes pass through the Twin Towers in less than seven-tenths of a second—shredded into a cloud of burning fuel and thousands of pieces of debris. The Towers are tested—and they cannot stand.
Both collapse within two hours. More than 2,600 passed. Soon, every decision made in their design, every brilliant innovation that made them possible, every compromise made in their construction—all of it would be scrutinised, analysed, and re-examined.
