Linda sets off alone to the spectacular wilderness of The Forest of Dean – in search of an identity, a purpose, and tree she climbed as a child. Torn between her obligations to country and family, and for the man she loves, Toni will be forced to choose a side, or lose it all.

While The Men Are Away

SBS Commission Australian Premiere

Wednesday, 27 September 2023 SBS On Demand (all eight episodes available)

It’s 1940s Australia. As you probably know, there’s a ruddy massive war on, so a lot of the men are away for a bit.

This is unsettling, but also pretty exciting for anyone who isn’t a man. Frankie is left in charge of her suffering farm after her husband is sent to war (or was he?).

She enlists Gwen and Esther, the freshly joined city-recruits of the Women’s Land Army to join herself, local Indigenous farmhand Kathleen, and certified coward Robert.

This is a show about people who don’t normally hold the reins of power suddenly having them shoved in their hands and told to giddy the hell up. It’s about five individuals who find each other, and for a glorious moment in time, sample a life tinged with promise, hope and acceptance. And once they taste it, it’s impossible to go back.

All episodes will be available to stream on SBS On Demand from Wednesday, 27 September. While The Men Are Away will premiere with a double episode on SBS on 27 September at 8.30 and 9.00pm, and will continue weekly.

Thursday, 28 September 2023 SBS On Demand (all six episodes available)

One midsummer evening in 1973, in a small Swedish town, two tourists are found murdered in a tent. The unsolved crime casts shadows on the lives of several people.

From the producers of The Killing, The Bridge and Borgen. Adapted from Kerstin Ekman’s international bestseller.

Blackwater will also air at a later date on SBS and will be in available in Swedish with English subtitles on SBS On Demand.

Chantal

Australian Premiere

Thursday, 28 September 2023 SBS On Demand & SBS (all eight episodes available)

Inspector Chantal Vantomme starts a new life in Loveringem, aka the Farwest of Flanders, as the new coordinator of the small and rural police office. She arrives in a macho world where the apparent tranquillity does not guarantee less crime.

Chantal will be available in Flemish with English subtitles on SBS On Demand.
