Who the Bloody Hell Are We on SBS – Australians love a good yarn, but so much of our rich history hasn’t been told or isn’t celebrated.

How can we truly know ourselves if we aren’t telling the whole story? SBS Original three-part documentary Who the Bloody Hell Are We? is a playful, surprising, and revelatory series that breathes new life into the Australian story by exploring our history through the lens of some of our most intriguing multicultural communities.

Join professional provocateur John Safran, stand-up comedian Cal Wilson, and kitchen maestro Adam Liaw as they explore how people of Jewish, Kiwi, and Chinese descent, like themselves, fit into our national narrative.

Their irreverent romp through the margins and back alleys of Australian history brings cracking stories that have been overlooked, ignored, or forgotten back into the spotlight.

Series One, Episode One: Who The Bloody HellAre We? With John Safran

Filmmaker, author and provocateur John Safran embarks on an idiosyncratic quest to discover the role that Jews have played in modern Australia’s story. With his characteristic curiosity and humour, John explores the stories of flamboyant bushranger ‘Teddy The Jewboy’, legendary general Sir John Monash (who led a brigade in Gallipoli during WWI and became a leading figure in Melbourne’s Jewish community) and self-made cosmetics queen Helena Rubinstein, who became famous for her marketing
slogan, ‘there are no ugly women, only lazy ones’ (unlike the women who wore her cream the slogan hasn’t aged well!).

Revelling in the parts of Australian Jewish history that have been obscured or eradicated all together, John also considers whether Jews who escaped the Holocaust were finally safe from persecution in post-war multicultural Australia, and investigates the current state of affairs for Jewish Australians. Humorous, unexpected, and shamelessly entertaining, it’s Australian history – but not as we know it.

All three episodes of Who The Bloody Hell Are We? will be available to stream on SBS On Demand from Wednesday 19 July

Who The Bloody Hell Are We? New Series Premiere – SBS Commission – Wednesday, 19 July at 7.30pm on SBS and SBS on Demand (3 Parts)
