With the German-Soviet pact, Stalin and Hitler put aside all political logic to let the Western democracies believe that such a rapprochement was impossible and finally reconcile the irreconcilable.
For that, they had to send each other signals through trusted agents, sideline those on each side who opposed such a rapprochement and wonder whether the other was bluffing before facing the facts: clearly each had understood that – human, political, ideological considerations aside – they had everything to gain by getting along.
