Churchill’s Forgotten War on SBS and SBS on Demand – When Churchill came to power at the beginning of World War II, he gave the instruction to ‘collar the lot!’, meaning the arrest of 30,000 Germans, Austrians and Italians who were residents in the UK.
The fear of a ‘fifth column’ of Nazi spies and sympathisers was too much for the new prime minister, and a war on the homefront was launched. For many innocent families – British-born Italians and Jewish refugees – the story would end in tragedy. Over 800 men were drowned while being deported overseas.
Churchill never spoke on the subject and only now – through archives, unseen papers from the Churchill Archive at the University of Cambridge, and first-hand testimony – do we uncover this long-forgotten chapter of the Second World War.
