Brodie Harper takes viewers to Lilydale, the gateway to the Yarra Valley (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country). She begins at Round Bird Can’t Fly, a longstanding regional favourite, then heads to another local gem around the corner, the Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre, where she meets director and actor Ian Frost. Her last stop is 10 minutes away, at Helen’s Hill Estate. At this family-owned vineyard she catches up with General Manager, Alex McIntosh, to enjoy a wine.
We find Madeline Spark in Kew (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country) checking out Kew Junction’s Progressive Dinner concept. With 13 top spots involved, this idea encourages solo diners and groups to try new dining venues in Kew and socialise with their community. To find out more, Madeline peppers Con Barbayannis, president of the Kew Junction Business Association. Diners are encouraged to purchase a ticket and try three participating restaurants in one night. Madeline picks Stupa Indian Nepalese for an entree and finishes with dessert at the Skinny Dog Hotel.
Meanwhile, Shane Delia shows us some of the best spots in Melbourne’s northern suburbs (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country) for a Middle Eastern feast.
In Northcote his first stop is Shamiat, a family-run cafe, restaurant and sweet shop on Victoria Road where he meets owners Helda and Atallah Moran to find out about their food story. Then he’s off to the dessert bakery Knafeh Nabulseyeh on Sydney Road in Coburg and a date with owner, Mousa Khayat. He then heads to one of his favourites, Kömür, a Turkish restaurant in Ascot Vale, run by Emir Ukur. Lastly, he stops by Maha North in Collingwood, his own latest venture.
Guest presenter Yvie Jones also explores Northcote. At All Are Welcome, a bakery started by Boris Portnoy, former head pastry chef at a three-Michelin-star venue in California’s Napa Valley, she digs into some moreish bakes and enjoys a coffee. Next, she finds Vintage Tool Shop, a vintage tool shop for those who love DIY jobs or collect handmade tools. Yvie talks tools with owner Mike Subritzky before meeting Hind Karim of Free to Feed, which creates empowering job opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers.
