Postcards on Channel 9 and 9Now (1 September) – Join the Postcards team this week as they tuck into top foodie spots from Gisborne to Ballarat and Melbourne, at 3.30pm Sunday on Channel 9 and 9Now.
Madeline Spark discovers both new and beloved spots in Gisborne (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country). First, the new kid on the block, Aitken Thirtysix, where she chats with owner Brooke Surgeon over a cup of coffee and a toastie. She then heads to ZENZEN, another new venue, which is pumping out delicious plates of Japanese street food. Maddy calls it a day at The Telegraph Hotel, a Gisborne fixture since 1852, with a classic pub meal and a red wine by the open fire.Â
Brodie Harper is in the close-knit community of Murrumbeena (Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country). At the local favourite, Cafe Omnia, owner Maruf Ahmed tells her why being part of Murrumbeena village is so special. She gets the same vibe at The Little Village Grocer, an old-fashioned providore selling quality fresh produce and specialty items. Brodie’s last stop is the Murrumbeena Wine Bar, where she’s the guest of the manager, Sasha Gonzalez.
Meanwhile, Shane Delia visits venues in Ballarat serving up top-notch hospitality (Wathaurong Country).
His first stop is The Ballarat Goods Shed, a newly minted event space that blends dining and community in a beautiful restored heritage precinct. With three unique menus under the one roof, Shane tries BoomTime Dumplings, savouring Hong Kong-style street food and bespoke cocktails. Two minutes down the road is Tin Roof Cafe with a menu as diverse as it is delicious, offering everything from pizzas and Greek street food to their star dish – a house-made spiced wonton bowl. Shane tops it all off at the Hotel Canberra, a venue that may look like a typical pub on the outside but surprises with an array of exciting dining experiences inside.Â
And Lauren Phillips explores beneath the city streets of Melbourne (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country). She drops by the European-inspired Spring Street Grocer, a two-floor food heaven. Ground level is full of fresh produce, pantry essentials and gourmet take-home meals, and as you descend the spiral staircase, you’re in Australia’s first underground cheese maturation cellar. Here you can taste, learn about and buy the finest selection of local and international cheeses. Just a five-minute stroll away, Lauren arrives at the Manhattan-inspired Morris House. Here, she chats with comedian Bron Lewis in the venue’s intimate basement comedy club, capping off the day with a mouthwatering banoffee-flavoured cocktail at Bar Clara’s cosy underground bar on Little Bourke Street.Â
