Lauren Phillips enjoys a tail-wagging day out in Port Melbourne (Bunurong Country) with her four-legged friend Ted, uncovering the suburb’s dog-friendly spots including the local dog beach and Caffe Di Lido, a laidback beachside café known for its early openings, bayside charm and puppychinos. A few blocks inland, Lauren finds The Rouse Eatery, a family-run, dog friendly gem serving wholesome brunch dishes with sunny outdoor seating perfect for people-watching. She wraps up at Paint for Fun, where Ted joins the creative action at a paint-your-pet class.
Madeline Spark uncovers the rustic charm of Blackwood (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country), a hidden gem just over an hour’s drive north-west from Melbourne. At the picturesque Garden of St Erth she explores the manicured grounds and chats with the passionate head gardener about the seasonal blooms. She then strolls into town, to Martin St Coffee Roasters, a local institution for roasting top-tier beans and serving up delicious café fare. Maddie rounds out her day at the historic Blackwood Hotel, a recently refurbished country pub big on hearty meals, local brews and a welcoming atmosphere.
Shane Delia checks out the thriving food scene of Geelong West (Wathaurong Country), starting with artisan pastries at the Born & Bread Bakehouse, a favourite known for its expertly crafted sourdough and sweet treats.
He visits Eileen’s Charcoal Grill, a Euro-style steakhouse inside the historic Sawyer’s Arms Hotel, where the menu pays tribute to its inimitable namesake, Eileen Clatworthy, who owned the Arms for 68 years. To finish, Shane heads to Kalyes Marinas Filipino Grill & Seafood, a gem of a venue serving up seafood boils packed with bold flavours.
Meanwhile guest presenters and Travel Guides favourites, Kevin and Janetta, spend the day in Castlemaine (Dja Dja Wurrung Country), revealing its unique charm one bite and sip at a time. They begin with bold flavours at Super Hero Banh Mi, a local favourite dishing up Vietnamese street food with serious flair. Next they wander through Hargraves Street to Castlemaine Fresh, where local produce and community spirit are on proud display. Their culinary adventure continues at Voor Ouker, a stylish new eatery inspired by Dutch and Indonesian cuisines, and to cap off their visit, Kevin and Janetta drop into Mostyn Street Cellars, a cosy new wine bar where good drinks and conversation flow with ease.
