My Way on Channel 9 – This week on My Way we meet a range of inspirational people who refuse to let age stop them, along with a guy whose home-brew kit became a beer dream come true, Sunday at 5.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
On a trip around the Sunshine State we hear from legendary locals from the Sunny Coast, Great Keppel Island and South-East Queensland who are proudly doing it their way.
On the Sunshine Coast you’ll find Peppie Simpson riding the waves of Noosa. Peppie has been a pioneer for women’s surfing since the 1970s. With the water as her second home, it’s no surprise she made surfing her lifetime passion at a time when women weren’t encouraged to ride a board. She ran the Victorian Women’s Surfing Association, which became part of the national surfing body.
Nowadays, Peppie preaches that no matter your age you can keep on surfing. She is a prime example that there are really no age limits on doing what you love, and encouraging others too.
Sandy Murdock is the driving force behind Traction, a not-for-profit organisation with seven locations dotted around South-East Queensland. They aim to get the wheels turning for disengaged kids, by restoring used bicycles in the classroom. Traction have helped more than 2,000 youngsters by using bicycles instead of textbooks to give them hands-on experience of building a bike in a safe environment. However, the conversation around the restoration activity is where the magic truly gears up.
The usual life of retirement wasn’t for Max Allen Senior, which is not surprising with his office right on the picturesque shores of Great Keppel Island. Max, along with his wife and son, runs Freedom Fast Cats, offering tourists and locals a unique adventure out to Great Keppel. Snorkelling, a glass-bottom boat tour, boom-netting and lunch are part of the attractions on this one of a kind trip to a one of a kind spot.
Set on farmland in the Sunny Coast hinterland is the Terella Brewery. After swapping power plugs for beer jugs, electrician-turned-brewer Brandt Bamford has combined his own brew with a family-friendly atmosphere in one of the choice spots in Queensland. Starting out with a home-brew kit, he got hooked on perfecting his own beer, and as he kept experimenting he received multiple offers to start a brewery. Now he has – and Brandt gets to do what he loves seven days a week.
