My Way on Channel 9 – This week My Way takes us up to Tropical North Queensland for a special episode, Sunday at 5.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
We travel down the Daintree River with nature-lover David White of Solar Whisper Cruises, who takes guests along for a special sighting of saltwater crocodiles on the only zero-emission boat to cruise the river. With David at the wheel, guests get a rare up-close glimpse of the big crocs he actually knows by name. His unmatched knowledge of the crocodiles and their habitat, combined with humour and creative storytelling, makes this an unforgettable experience.
Over in Port Douglas, the inspirational Jason East isn’t letting tragedy stop him. Feeling most at home on the water after a childhood spent yachting around the Torres Strait, he became a commercial crayfish diver, until a car crash 14 years ago confined him to a wheelchair.
After soul searching while in hospital, Jason decided to get back to the water and successfully completed his scuba dive certificate, despite his mobility issues. Encouraged by stories like Jason’s, tourism companies, like Quicksilver Dive Centre, are leading the way in accessible tourism, implementing training programs and infrastructure within their tourism experiences and allowing people of all abilities to enjoy the magic of our Great Barrier Reef.
Merryn Hughes has 30 years of experience in putting on large-scale events, and her latest venture, Shine on Gimuy, spotlights the cultural heritage of the Yidindji people of Cairns, traditionally known as Gimuy. Led by artistic director and Bundjalung woman Rhoda Roberts, Shine on Gimuy is a festival that gives voice to the oral indigenous heritage of the region. With local artists involved, it offers a unique and powerful experience of these First Nations people.
With a keenness to connect tourism and science, marine biologist Eric Fisher has led the fascinating snorkel tours at Reef Magic on the Great Barrier Reef for 19 years.
Living on the reef and working in his floating lab, Eric has seen firsthand the impact of climate change and cyclones. It led him to head up Australia’s first trial of Reef Stars, pieces of steel covered in small coral pieces, in the shape of a star, that are placed in large areas of dead coral to promote growth. The success is amazing, as a Reef Magic cruise will prove.
Tune into My Way to meet these Tropical North Queenslanders making their wonderful mark on a wonderful region, this Sunday at 5.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now
