China / Taiwan conflict this week on 60 Minutes

THIS WEEK ON 60 MINUTES

THE BATTLE FOR TAIWAN
It’s a battle most of the world dreads – China vs Taiwan – but it seems the likelihood of conflict is increasing by the day. Chinese President Xi Jinping has made it his number one priority for Taiwan, which he sees as a renegade Chinese province to be brought back under the control of Beijing. And his threat couldn’t be any clearer: if Taiwan resists, Xi will turn the modern, free-wheeling democracy – with a
population similar to Australia – into a bloody battlefield. As Tom Steinfort reports, what’s playing out in Taiwan right now could shape the world for decades to come, forever marking the region as the place where World War III began.

TRAFFICKED
Politicians are always quick to shout the mantra that Australia’s laws on border protection, who’s allowed into the country and who’s kept out, are some of the toughest in the world. But why should we believe what we’re being told? Last week 60 MINUTES, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald revealed how international criminals were circumventing laws and trafficking vulnerable Asian women to work in the sex industry here. This week Nick McKenzie’s special investigation continues with more explosive evidence proving just how easily our borders are being breached.
