Yakka: Australia at Work on ABC – This episode explores the post-war revolution in which Australia was transformed from an agricultural economy into a manufacturing one.
Initially, this work revolution was incredibly successful. Full employment guaranteed unprecedented prosperity for most Australians and a standard of living the envy of the world. However, growing wage demands, inflation, and an oil crisis in the 1970s brought this extraordinary experiment to an end.
Our experts examine the post-war economic boom that gave way to inflation and unemployment in the 1970s and then – after a brief respite in the 1980s – the conflict between Unions and government in the 1990s which eventually gave way to the next workplace revolution: the Free Market.
