This is Going to Hurt on ABC – Adam struggles to recover from his mistake, haunted by Erika’s baby. He has become hypervigilant at work, which is making life hell for Shruti, keeping up with Adam’s paranoid extra tests and referrals.
Adam meets Ruth – a stoic patient who is playing down her abdominal pain. He’s sure that she has a serious condition, but his nemesis, the slightly more senior registrar Julian, insists that Ruth is well and should be sent home, showing Adam up in front of Mr Lockhart.
At home, Harry has invited Adam’s best friend Greg and his fiancée Emma round for dinner, to heal their friendship since Adam abandoned his stag do. Adam is bitterly jealous of Greg’s comfortable, well-off circumstances and puts his foot in it by revealing the sex of the child they’re expecting.
After Greg and Emma storm out, Harry tries to find out what’s wrong with Adam. In a moment of madness, Adam attempts to take their relationship to the next level.
Back at work, Adam insists that something is wrong with Ruth, and decides to operate on her, against the orders of Julian and Lockhart. He thinks his moment of confidence has gotten him into Lockhart’s good books, until Lockhart reveals that Adam may face serious consequences for his mistake with Erika.
