This is Going to Be Big on ABC – This Is Going To Be Big is a heart-warming two-part documentary unfolding as teenagers living with disabilities and neurodiversity share their dreams and confront their challenges while preparing for their high school musical.
Their parents and teachers are with them, but the spotlight is on the teens coming of age wanting to show who they are and what they can do.
Teachers Lori (drama teacher), Darcy (music teacher) and Tony (facilities manager) meet up to discuss this year’s script, The Time Travelling Trio’ – a time travelling musical centred around the Legend John Farnham and his hit songs. All three teachers are firm believers in the power of performance and theatre to inspire confidence, spark connections and create a sense of fun in their students.
The casting call goes out for the leading roles and students are introduced to the script as they prepare for auditions. Some of them have never sung out loud in front of their parents, let alone in front of a packed theatre. We meet Chelsea, Elyse, Halle and Josh who are living with disabilities and neurodiversity, each have their own reasons for putting themselves forward. Through interviews and observations at school and insights into their lives with their families, these four teens begin to tell their stories.
The auditions are here and despite the nerves all students give it their all and after a long day Lori, Darcy and Tony are buoyant after what they’ve seen.
They now have the difficult task of working out who gets what role.
The students learn what roles they’ve been allocated and get straight to work learning the script, it becomes very apparent the enormity of the task ahead. For Chelsea, when she get’s tired or over-exerts she can become anxious and is prone to fainting, and during a rehearsal the challenge of learning lines becomes too much and she faints; the teachers rush to her aid and when she comes round, she wonders whether she can take on this challenge or if she should just give up.
