The Messenger on ABC – Scruffy, cab-driving Ed (William McKenna) is hardly the saviour-most-likely, until one day, an accidental heroic act changes everything.
The next day, he receives an Ace of Diamonds playing card, with the addresses of three strangers written on it. Who sent this card? And what the hell is Ed meant to do with it?
Ed starts by scoping out the people on the card, the oldest woman he has ever seen, a feisty teenage track star and an abusive husband who scares the crap out of him. Ed’s at a loss as to what he’s meant to do but fate sets him on a path right to the old lady’s door.
Ed pursues the others on the card with less success. Sophie, the running girl, mistakes him for a pervy creep. And, in Dale, Ed witnesses the horror of domestic abuse.
Ed calls the police to intervene and experiences the sickening reality of just how hard it is for anyone to truly help.
Ed’s ready to chuck it all in. But the card reappears where he least expects it, and with it, an ominous message that makes it clear there’s no way out of this for Ed.
