Highlights from tonight’s episode include:
Humpback Whale Recovery – a big conservation success story has been the recent resurgence of the local humpback whale population. Tim assists with a vital photographic and genetic sampling survey of a pod of young males to monitor their population structure, diet and health – including the presence of any pollutants.
Fifteen kilometres inland, Tim swims in a lake fed constantly by the sea where ocean-going fish and mangroves persist in an environment that supports some of the world’s most endangered migratory birds.
Until this series no scientist has ever tried catching and tagging the elusive dugongs in the vast Exmouth Gulf. Working with Traditional Owners, Tim helps a team of researchers to capture, tag and release 10 of these gentle mammals and in doing so gets to hold a 400kg relative in his arms.
