Australia may not always have known how to appreciate its artists, intellectuals and creators. But the arts have been crucial in articulating a vision of what Australia means.
They have connected us to the feelings and experiences we all share and drawn our attention to the stories and histories of our fellow Australians that may be less familiar to us, and less comfortable.
They’ve celebrated us and immortalized us; criticized us and lampooned us.
They’ve appealed to our imaginations as well as our ambitions – showing us who we are, and challenging us to grow, as individuals and as a national community.
