Grand Designs: New Zealand on ABC – James Davis is no stranger to building houses. At just 31 he’s already done a renovation and a new build – whilst also running his landscaping and signwriting businesses in Paraparaumu.
He’s just bought a section in a new subdivision on steep hills above Waikanae with incredible views out to Kapiti Island and now he wants to build something different.
Having spent his childhood holidays making wonderful memories staying with his uncle at his round house in Wanaka, James has decided he’s going to build a modern version of this uncle’s round house. A house that will be able to maximize the 360 degree views the site offers.
His mother will be his partner in crime, both financially and with design decisions. He’s in good hands as she brings with her a wealth of knowledge from working in the building industry.
James’ round house will, in fact, be 12 sided – it’s cladding will give it the effect of appearing round.
It will feature a double-height atrium as you enter through the lobby. Taking centre stage will be a spiral steel staircase that leads up to the first floor.
James wants the house to look like a tower so the roof will be flat with internal drainage and the exterior cladding will be cedar.
But the big question remains, in the face of escalating building costs and uncertain times, will James come to regret his decision of risking it all to pull off such a complicated design?
