When a number of death notices appear in the Oxford Mail each with a distinctive, cryptic message and following an apparent sudden death, Endeavour (Shaun Evans) is determined to solve the puzzle. The investigation takes him first to a series of funerals, and then behind the curtain at a funeral directors’, eventually forcing him to confront his own mortality.
Meanwhile, Thursday (Roger Allam) is facing more than one confrontation of his own, as his past threatens to catch up with him at last. There’s trouble in the present to deal with first, and he is forced to resort to desperate measures to protect those he loves the most.
Back at CID, a bad penny turns up at Castle Gate, determined to close down any further inquiry into Blenheim Vale before Strange (Sean Rigby) looks set for a transfer to Kidlington, and Bright (Anton Lesser) sets his sights on a more peaceful future. With the team going their separate ways onto pastures new, where will this leave Endeavour and Thursday?
