Told through the eyes of Queen Victoria’s granddaughters – the Hesse sisters, who either married or had doomed love affairs with all the main male protagonists, the King, the Tsar and the Kaiser – the series lifts the lid on the family tensions which set cousin against cousin and saw millions plunged into the bloodiest war the world had ever known: a world in which the chink of champagne glasses gives way to the blast of bombs, war and murder.
Series One, Episode One
Our story begins at the wedding of Prin cess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine to Prince Louis of Battenberg.
Her big day quickly spirals out of control. Her grandmother, Queen Victoria ’ joy at seeing her granddaughter marry turns to fear for the next Hesse sister, Ella who wants to marry her cousin, Sergei, a Russian Grand Duke and son of recently assassinated Tsar Alexander II.
Events worsen with news that Victoria’s father, Ludwig, married his Russian mistress in secret on that very day
