REVIEW | Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Gen – Reviewing a revived series always comes with a challenge: do you judge it on its own merits, or do you compare it with the beloved original? I felt the same way when I reviewed the new Mother and Son, and the same holds true here with Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Gen.
The original, hosted by the incomparable Shaun Micallef, left viewers with fond memories and a very particular brand of sharp, quirky humor. Fast forward to 2025, and the baton has been passed to Anne Edmonds. A familiar face from Have You Been Paying Attention?, Edmonds brings her own style—dry, sarcastic, and playfully chaotic. Importantly, she doesn’t just sit behind the host’s desk; she throws herself into the challenges, roams the stage, and injects a fresh, energetic edge into the format.
Episode one featured team captains Dave Hughes, Tommy Little, and Anisa Nandaula, alongside guests Carrie Bickmore, Todd McKenney, and Will Gibb. For me, it was a decent but uneven start. Some challenges missed the mark, and as someone born in the ’80s, I wasn’t familiar with Anisa or Will—making a few moments fall a little flat. Still, Edmonds’ presence gave the show spark.
By episode two, however, the series truly hit its stride. With Hughes, Little, and Nandaula joined by Rove McManus, Callum Hole, and Steph Tisdell, the chemistry was undeniable.
The banter was razor-sharp, the comedy relentless, and the energy electric. This was Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Gen at its best: clever, nostalgic, and laugh-out-loud funny.
It makes you wonder why Channel 10 didn’t kick things off with episode two—it’s the kind of debut that would’ve hooked old fans and new ones instantly. But for those who stick with it, the payoff is worth it.
Ultimately, while it’s tempting to measure this new season against the Micallef era, Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Gen 2025 deserves to be judged on its own terms. Anne Edmonds proves a strong, capable host, and once the show finds its rhythm, it’s clear this battle of the ages still has plenty of laughs to give.
