Sydney’s Super Tunnel on SBS and SBS on Demand S2E1 – An extraordinary behind-the-scenes series capturing the construction of the next colossal stage of Sydney Metro, one of the world’s biggest railway projects.
Filmed over 7 years, Sydney’s Super Tunnel was granted unprecedented access to this world-scale mega project, capturing the human spirit of the massive engineering challenge facing more than 50,000 workers.
Driverless trains are carrying millions of passengers a year from the city’s outskirts — but their journey to the city is only half complete. A new network of tunnels will eventually stretch more than 100 kilometres around Sydney, winding their way between the basements of city skyscrapers and deep under Sydney
Harbour.
Dozens of new railway stations, designed to put customers first, are challenging engineers to come up with creative solutions. And a fleet of modern and unique metro trains — run from a futuristic Mission Control — will move people quickly around Sydney, transforming Australia’s biggest city for generations to come. With a ‘must finish’ deadline set, can the team compete this audacious engineering feat in time?
Episode One:
At the site of the future Waterloo Station, excavation work starts — to be only stopped soon after by Sydney’s colonial past. Historical artefacts are exposed, telling the story of the area’s working-class roots.
Meanwhile, the tunnel boring machines are assembled, and their journeys get underway. At Martin Place station, the site is being excavated for the new metro railway station, which will sit below the existing suburban station.
