The Jury: Murder Trial (UK) on SBS and SBS on Demand S1E1 – This British production inspired the SBS Australian commission The Jury: Death on the Staircase, which is available now on SBS On Demand.
The Jury: Murder Trial (UK) asks how much can we trust our justice system? In this landmark experiment, a real-life murder trial is restaged in front of two juries of ordinary people. Will they both reach the same verdict?
The two juries are asked to judge on the case of a man who admits he killed his wife, but whose defence maintains that he lost control, and is therefore not guilty of murder. Actors recreate the trial verbatim in front of the juries, who watch unaware of each other, from specially built separate compartments in the courtroom. What will the two juries decide, and why? How well will they follow the complexities of the law around loss of control? And after they have deliberated, will they even agree with each other’s verdicts?
Episode One:
A husband killed his wife with a hammer, but denied murder. In an extraordinary legal experiment, his real-life trial is being restaged by actors – word or word – in front of two juries of ordinary people, neither of whom know about each other.
