From Marseille in the West to Menton by the Italian Border, lies a hundred and sixty kilometre stretch of coastline that became the great dream destination of the twentieth century and still glitters today.
Sandi will explore not just the luxurious high life of this playground of the rich and famous, but the fascinating cultural history, treading in the footsteps of the some of the greatest artists and writers of the last 150 years. She meets winemakers and parfumiers and enjoys great food as she strolls the old towns, promenades and beaches of the Cote D’Azur.
Episode One:
Sandi starts her Riviera Rail Trip in the lovely little town of Sanary Sur Mer, where she indulges her love of boats and finds out how the giants of German literature made this sleepy town an intellectual hotbed after fleeing the Nazis in the 1930s.
She treads in the footsteps of Edith Wharton, one of her favourite writers, in her beautifully preserved garden, strolls along the very train platform where cinema was born and hits the Riviera’s high life in St Tropez, where she visits the exclusive beach club that was once the epicentre of the sexual revolution.
