Jaws: Making A Splash In Hollywood on SBS and SBS on Demand – The arrival of Jaws in 1975 marks a key before and after moment in American cinema history.
Leaving protest and anti-establishment films behind, it heralded the era of the blockbuster, big movies full of suspense and special effects – and launched the career of a young Steven Spielberg.
This film investigates the making of this pillar of pop culture, a production that was its very own thriller behind the scenes, full of twists and turns. It explores the different outcomes for cinema history if the mechanical shark had worked properly, if Spielberg had exited the project, and if it had been released during the winter as planned.
Based on film’s footage, featuring archives with Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss – as well as exclusive interviews with the heirs of Jaws such as Lorraine Gary, Alexandra Aja or Ian Shaw – we examine the film’s significance and its enduring legacy as a launchpad for both modern cinema and one of the greatest film makers of all time
