Davos 1917 on SBS and SBS on Demand S1E1 – 1917 – the First World War is ravaging Europe. By contrast, Switzerland seems like an oasis of peace.
But behind the scenes of neutral Switzerland, the secret agents of the world powers are lurking in Davos. Here, a young woman searches for self-determination and does everything she can to win back her daughter, who was taken away from her at birth.
Season One, Episode One:
Swiss nurse Johanna Gabathuler (Dominique Devenport) returns heavily pregnant from her Red Cross
mission on the Western Front to Davos, where her family runs the Cronwald sanatorium.
While still in the maternity room, her father orders her illegitimate daughter to be taken away from her – for the sake of honour. Johanna is to marry the influential politician Thanner (Sven Schelker), who the family hopes will save the financially struggling Cronwald.
When she learns that she must also give up her job as a nurse after the wedding, she loses hope of ever being able to lead a self-determined life. It is thanks to Countess Ilse von Hausner (Jeanette Hain) that Johanna doesn’t despair.
The countess knows where her child is. But Johanna has no idea what a fateful deal she is getting herself into, as the countess is an agent for the German Secret Service.
