Living Black on NITV Redefining Australia: 50 Years of SBS – NITV’s weekly flagship Indigenous news and current affairs programs, Living Black, hosted by Walkley Award-winning journalist Karla Grant, celebrated the 50th anniversary of SBS in June with a special episode which explored how the network has redefined Australia in how it tells First Nations stories.

This special Living Black episode REDEFINING AUSTRALIA: 50 YEARS OF SBS will now get an encore broadcast this Friday September 26 at 8:30pm on SBS. In this hour-long special episode, we hear from prominent storytellers, together with former and current SBS and NITV staff who look at the role the network has played in amplifying First Nations voices. This year also marks Karla Grant’s 30th anniversary at the broadcaster and the episode also explores how much it’s changed during her time there.

Featured personalities in the program include:
  • Ray Martin AM (Journalist & Presenter)
  • Frances Rings (Bangarra Dance Theatre, Artistic Director)
  • Sean Choolburra (Comedian & Actor)
  • Pat Turner (CEO NACCHO – National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation)
  • Catherine Liddle (CEO SNAICC – National Voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children)
  • Nakari Thorpe (ABC, News Presenter)
  • James Taylor (Outgoing SBS Managing Director)
  • Tanya Denning Orman (SBS, Director First Nations)
  • Natalie Ahmat (NITV, Head of Indigenous News & Current Affairs)

It’s a fitting tribute with SBS the home of NITV, and Living Black, Australia’s longest running Indigenous current affairs television program, now in its 22nd year.

Karla Grant is a Western Arrernte woman and Walkley Award-winning presenter and journalist who has been with SBS for 30 years. She has been EP of the program she developed since 2002, which she began fronting two years later. Living Black continues to investigate critical national issues through a unique First Nations lens, with compelling stories told predominantly by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
