Livinia Nixon explores the mesmerising world of Yayoi Kusama at NGV International (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country) in the largest retrospective of the renowned Japanese artist ever staged in the southern hemisphere. Guided by NGV Senior Curator of Asian Art, Wayne Crothers, they explore the immense breadth of Kusama’s career from early paintings to large scale canvas, to sculpture, fashion, and her iconic infinity rooms. Livinia wraps up her tour outside the gallery, where the artist’s bold vision spills onto Melbourne’s streets, transforming the cityscape into a living artwork.
Madeline Spark is in the coastal town of Sorrento (Bunurong Country) on the Mornington Peninsula.
After coffee at Flat Blk, a charming café known for its homemade cakes and welcoming atmosphere, she steps into history at the Hotel Sorrento, a family-run clifftop retreat that has offered seaside luxury since 1872. From there Madeline takes in the breathtaking Millionaire’s Walk, a scenic coastal trail lined with grand mansions and private jetties. She finishes at Point King Beach, where the sparkling blue waters are a perfect spot to unwind.
Meanwhile Lauren Phillips seeks the best seaside lunch options in Williamstown (also Bunurong Country), a short drive from Melbourne. At the Off the Pier Fish & Chippery, a local favorite famed for perfectly cooked fish and crispy golden chips, she finds an excellent spot for a picnic by the water. Next she heads to The Kiosk by d’Asporto, where classic beachside bites meet authentic Italian street food, from handmade focaccias to homemade choc tops. Lauren winds up at the historic Morning Star Hotel, which has been newly updated while maintaining its old-world charm, complete with a beer garden and a menu of top pub grub.
