My Way on Channel 9 Queensland and 9Now S10E9 – In collaboration with Good Food, food lovers will rejoice on this week’s episode of My Way as Good Food contributor and cook Julia Busuttil Nishimura embarks on a flavour-filled journey across Tropical North Queensland, where she discovers unique, local produce and meets the people behind the region’s distinct food and beverage culture, this Sunday at 5.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
Kicking off in the idyllic beaches of Palm Cove, Julia meets Nick Holloway, the chef behind renowned restaurant, Nu Nu, who shares his passion for blending ingredients from the reef, rainforest and the land to create his award-winning menu. In 2004, Nick left Melbourne’s culinary scene for Cairns to pursue his dream of opening a laidback, beachside restaurant and 20 years later, it is still the cornerstone of Tropical North Queensland’s fine dining scene.
Further north and nestled in the ancient landscape of the Daintree, Julia visits Cape Trib Farm which grows over 80 varieties of curious, tropical fruit, the next one more weird and wonderful than the last. Merran Blockey, her husband Jeremy and son Sam are dedicated to sharing the unique offerings with visitors to the farm that yields a cornucopia of unheard of fruits thriving in this tropical climate.
On the Atherton Tablelands, Julia finds Mark Watkins, the mastermind behind Mt Uncle Distillery.
At 16 Mark was brewing ginger beer in his backyard, and since founding the distillery in 2001 he has been crafting award-winning rum, gin and liqueurs infused with local products and botanicals. But he didn’t stop there, also turning his hand towards making agave spirits after a trip to Mexico. Mark grows his agave onsite and even gives Julia a chance at harvesting one of these giant plants, which is not for the faint hearted.
After a dreamy day exploring the romantic Paronella Park, Julia delights in a warm welcome at the Mena Creek Hotel which is over 100 years old. Managers Katherine and Jacinta Stevens, who share deep ties to the town, welcome her with a lesson in pouring the perfect pint. Perched atop a hill, the hotel has long been a community hub, and under their care it is still a place where everyone feels like family.
From the vibrant culinary scene to farm-to-table treasures, delve into the rich flavours and stories of Tropical North Queensland with Julia Busuttil Nishimura, on My Way this Sunday at 5.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
